Core Area Photos : 1 | 2 | 3 Maracaibo Estates is located on the Athol Peninsula on Salt Spring Island. At about 550 acres, it consumes most of the peninsula, and has six miles of oceanfront, half of which faces south onto Long Harbour. Purchased in 1969, Maracaibo has developed into a family oriented community, with a commitment to maintain the natural beauty of the land. About half of the land was divided into strata lots, the rest was held as common land. Maracaibo has some restrictions as to location of house on a lot, landscaping, and on the exterior look. The philosophy is that the homes should blend into their surroundings, and the park like nature of the development be preserved. Most homes are on a community water system. All roads through the development are paved. When you purchase property in Maracaibo, you must also purchase a share in the holding company "Maracaibo Estates Ltd.". The company maintains the common areas, and common assets of the development. An annual membership fee is also charged to cover operating expenses. Maracaibo offers its residents a feature rich environment, much of which is in what is known as the Core Area : A network of walking trials roams though about 300 acres of common land offering access to various beaches, and viewpoints. There are five rental cottages, which may be rented by residents with guest overflow. Four of the cottages have 3 bedrooms, fully equipped kitchens, 2 washrooms, fireplace, & barbecue. The fifth cottage is more rustic, but offers close access to a beautiful clamshell beach. Maracaibo has a full time onsite manager, and offers great security with regular patrols. Maracaibo Estates is unique in the Gulf Islands. It offers a set of features that would be impossible to duplicate.
