We are considered high bank waterfront. We are not the highest bank properties on the
island but we are considered high bank because we do not have an easy way to get down to
the water because of the steepness of our bank. This is not a problem for us because the
view is far more spectacular from this property (approximately 260 degree view) than those
lower down the street closer to the water.
Our view overlooks the Swanson Channel. We have a South-Southwest-Southeast exposure. We
see the sunrise and sunsets throughout the year, sometimes just the colours, other times
we can actually see the "sun ball".
We have light all year round, even during the rainy/stormy days. During the winter months,
we are often able to sit out on our deck because of the warm sun. We have been told that
our property is far warmer than those properties that are lower down the street and closer
to the water. The sun and the openness of the property are a contributing factor to this.
The winter storms allow us to experience views of the wild ocean and the accompanying
winds - it is quite something to see from the warmth of your home.
We are able to use the hot tub pretty well every day of the year.
From our deck and our bluff, we have seen the killer whales swimming by in the Swanson
Channel. We also see eagles, turkey vultures, porpoises, seals, ducks, deer, and a wide
variety of birds.
The channel has the border between Canada and the US so we are also able to see many
Canadian and American ships and smaller craft clinging to their respective sides of the
imaginary border. Cruise ships, sail boats and various sizes of motor boats also cruise
along the channel.
In addition to the marine traffic, we are able to see many small aircraft (float planes,
etc.) flying from Victoria, Poets Cove, and so on. Sometimes they flyover Swanson Channel
just about at eye level. It is really quite something to see.
We are a five minute walk to two swimming beaches that are in sheltered coves and a third
ocean view/access point. You are able to kayak in the coves and then out around the
islands.
Our view includes: Salt Spring Island, Moresby Island, South Vancouver Island, Stewart
Island (US), Olympia Mountains (US), and some of the San Juan Islands (US).
Evenings, particularly clear ones, are spectacular for viewing the stars. During August
2004, we saw a meteor shower which apparently comes by at the same time (every year I
think). The harvest moon is breathtaking from this property. Various planets are visible
at different times of the year as well.
