The beautiful heritage buildings of Penfold Farm have been a landmark in the
Cowichan Valley since their original construction in 1921. Conversion of the barn
to a house took place in 1980, with modern plumbing and electrical work.
Extensive renovations and improvements have been added continuously over the
intervening years.
People visiting Penfold Farm over the years have often commented - well they
invariably comment on - how beautiful it is. Some say it is the most beautiful
property they have seen. Some have compared it to a Tuscan villa. Many artists
have come here to draw and paint. One of E.J. Hughes' well-known paintings was
of the view from Penfold over Quamichan Lake (it is in the book of his work).
One of the Cowichan Valley's best known current artists, Jennifer Lawson, an
artist who has visited and painted many gardens, was painting here in June of this
year and said that we must have one of the most beautiful gardens in Canada. The
buildings and gardens of Penfold have often been the subject of paintings and
greeting cards.
